Since April 20th 2003 the old warehouses Afrika and De Zwijger on the Veemkade in Amsterdam were taken bakc in use by an enthousiastic group of squatters and artists. This action is meant to an reply to the non-functioning 'breedingspace' policy of the Amsterdam municipality and the commercial dictatorship that evicts cultural free havens time after time. Our basic principles for the use of the buildings are autonomy, nonhierarchy, societal criticism, D.I.Y., sustainability and international solidarity. Sinds 20 april 2003 zijn de oude pakhuizen Afrika en de Zwijger aan de Amsterdamse Veemkade weer in gebruik genomen door een groep enthousiaste krakers en kunstenaars. Deze daad is een antwoord op het niet functionerende Amsterdamse broedplaatsbeleid en de heersende commerciële dictatuur, die culturele vrijhavens keer op keer ontruimt. Uitgangspunten bij gebruik en activiteiten in de panden zijn autonomie, nonhierarchie, maatschappijkritiek zelfwerkzaamheid, duurzaamheid en internationale solidariteit. In de panden bevinden zich inmiddels woon- en werkruimtes, een expositieruimte, een micro cinema, een volkskeuken, concertzaal, weggeefwinkel, fietswerkplaats en kunstenaarsateliers.
